1. Early Life and Education
A native of Kohat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Shehryar Khan Afridi was born on March 12, 1971, into a family with a legacy of public service. His father, Nadir Shah Afridi, served as a district counselor and later as a member of parliament, while his brother, Major (r) Tariq Javed, pursued a career in the bureaucracy following his retirement from the armed forces. Afridi pursued his academic interests by obtaining a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Peshawar.
2. Political Career
- Member of the National Assembly: Afridi embarked on his political journey by winning a seat in the National Assembly of Pakistan in June 2013. He continued to serve as a member of the assembly, with multiple terms from 2013 to 2018 and then from 2018 to 2023.
- Ministerial Positions: Throughout his tenure in the National Assembly, Afridi held various significant positions, including Minister of State for Interior from August 2018 to April 2019 and Minister of State for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) from April 2019 to September 2020. Additionally, he assumed the responsibility of the Ministry of Narcotics Control following the passing of Ali Mohammad Mahar.
- Chairperson of Parliamentary Special Committee on Kashmir: Afridi chaired the Parliamentary Special Committee on Kashmir from May 2020 to April 2022, demonstrating his dedication to addressing critical issues facing the nation.
