Early Life and Education:
- Born on November 6, 1950, in Babra Bazaar, Rawalpindi, Punjab, into a Kashmiri family.
- Received early education from Polytechnic College and graduated from Government Gordon College.
- Completed Bachelor of Laws from the University of Punjab in 1973 and later obtained a Master’s in political science from the same university in 1982.
Political Career:
- Elected to the National Assembly eight times, beginning in 1985.
- Initially campaigned on the Islamic Democratic Alliance (IDA) ticket, later joined Pakistan Muslim League (N) and then Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q).
- Served as Minister of Sports under the IDA government and later as Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Federal Minister for Railways under PML-Q.
- Founded Awami Muslim League (AML) and served as its president.
- Formed electoral alliances, including with Imran Khan’s PTI, in various elections.
- Served as Minister for Railways in Imran Khan’s cabinet from August 2018 to December 2020.
- Appointed as Minister for the Interior in December 2020 until his removal in April 2022 after Imran Khan’s ousting.
Controversies:
- Replaced as minister-in-waiting during Prime Minister Vajpayee’s visit to Pakistan in 2004 due to objections from the Indian foreign ministry.
- Accused by Yasin Malik of running a jihadi camp in Punjab in 2005, a claim later retracted by Malik.
- Denied permit to travel to Srinagar in 2005 by Indian authorities.
- Detained at Houston airport in 2012 over suspected links with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, later released after diplomatic intervention.
- Off-loaded from a Toronto-bound PIA flight in 2014 due to non-issuance of clearance by Canadian authorities.
- Accused by Malik Shakeel Awan in 2018 of concealing possession of land in electoral papers, won legal case but later confessed to the omission.
