Joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2012, appointed as Senior Vice President.
Elected as Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-48 in August 2013 by-elections.
Re-elected as MNA from NA-54 in 2018 general elections.
Served in various standing committees of the National Assembly.
Appointed as Finance Minister of Pakistan in August 2018, resigned in April 2019.
Re-appointed as Federal Minister for Planning, Development, Reforms, and Special Initiatives in November 2019.
Served as PTI secretary-general from December 2021 to May 2023.
Resigned from party positions in May 2023 and formally departed from politics in November 2023.
